Legionella in cold-water storage tanks

The bacteria Legionella (pneumophila) aka Legionella, causes a deadly form of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ disease. It rapidly multiplies in water systems like cooling towers and water tanks. Water that is kept at temperatures between 20-45°C and organic debris supports Legionella’s growth. These bacteria are inactive below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C. So, once a cold-water tank has been installed, we recommend servicing it regularly to ensure it is free from any bacterial growth and functioning efficiently.

How to reduce the risk of Legionella

The risk of Legionella can be brought down through effective management and control of water systems. This can be achieved by implementing preventative measures, such as:

  • Storing hot water at a minimum of 60°C and keeping cold water below 20°C
  • Avoiding water stagnation to prevent the growth of biofilm.
